NOTE: 1:9-11 - Three times the Father from Heaven confirms His pleasure audibly in His only begotten Son, Jesus! At His baptism, is the first confirmation. No doubt, this helped the disciples in their faith.

1:12-13 - The word used by the Holy Spirit to “drive Jesus forth” into the wilderness is “ekBALlei”. This is a very strong word in the Greek. It is not along the line of “leading one” - it is almost as if He were cast into this 40 days of fasting, and then being tested by Satan. It was such a severe testing, that the Father sent angelsto minister to His Son, just as He did for Elijah before he made his arduous trip to Mount Sinai after Jezebel's threatening. Angels appear many times in the Scriptures. “Visions Beyond the Veil” by H.A. Baker record angelic visitations to little Chinese boys at the Adullam mission in S.W. China.

1:14-15 - The initial message of Jesus is the same as that of John the Baptist - 'The Kingdom of God is at hand!” The Kingdom of God is“righteousness, and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit”according to Paul in Romans 14:17. It wasn't till Jesus died, rose again, ascended to heaven, and poured out the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost - that this announcement came into reality. Repentance and faith are the two key words for entrance into this Kingdom. See Hebrews 6:1-2 for the six foundation truths of the Kingdom. Peter in Acts 2:38 spells this out with simple clarity: “Repent (which includes faith here) and be baptizedeach of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto remission of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” The Greek word “gift” here is “do-reA”, and is used but 11 times in the NT. Its first reference is John 4:10, where it is described as an artesian wellwithin each of us - flowing up into eternal life. This is the Kingdom of God in reality! This is normalChristianity, as described by Watchman Nee.

1:16-20 - Two of the first 4 disciples Jesus called to be with Him were “mending their nets,” - ka-tarTIzon-tas. This word appears in the NT 13 times in the verbal form, plus 3 other times in three other forms. It is a keyword in the NT. One of its most important appearances is in Ephesians 4:12. Here the Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul tells us that the 5-fold ministry of Ephesians 4:11 is to equipthe saints for the work of the ministry. It is notthe pastor or evangelist or apostle's job to do all the ministry. It is the job of the 5-fold ministry to perfect, equip, and chiropractically adjustthe saints into a functioning body under their Head, Jesus Christ! He then by the Spirit uses eachmember of His body for His purposes on earth. We are notcalled to be pew-warmers! We are called to let the 5-fold ministries adjust us to be every oneused in Christ's Vineyard! Disciples fit into this function. Pew-warmers or mere converts do not really count!

1:21-39 - Jesus teaching was always accompanied “with signs following!” Healing the sick and casting out demons. When we come to Mark 16:9-20, we see from the last 12 verses of this Gospel, that every believercan and should expect the 5 signs following his ministry to take place. My wife Marie and I don't count ourselves as evangelists with this extraordinary type of ministry. Yet, we dosee as prophetic teachers this portion of the Scripture fulfilled in our ministry. Satan hatesand fearsthese 12 verses. He seeks to have them omitted from many translations. But God's Bible Numerics through Ivan Panin tell us that if any portion of the Scriptures can be omitted, these 12 verses would be the very lastto go! More Bible Numerics appear in these 12 verses than perhaps any other portion of the NT. J.A.W.
